History & Lore

Ancient Byzantine and Assyrian cultures used Carnelian for courage, both in battle as well as during performances. Carnelian was believed to help timid speakers become eloquent and bold. The ancient Egyptians believed that wearing Carnelian added a sense of vitality to the spirit and body. They referred to Carnelian as the “setting sun.” For these reasons, Carnelian was included in King Tut’s pectorals and death mask. Because of its orange hues, they also likened Carnelian to the fertile menstrual blood of the mother goddess, Isis. Carnelian has been identified as one of the first of twelve stones in the Breastplate of Aaron, the elder brother of Moses. It is also one of the twelve gemstones that lined the walls of heaven in Revelations.
