Exploring Opus Interrasaile: A Fusion of Past and Present

I am always exploring the deeper meanings and inspirations that influence the art I create. One fascinating technique that I use a lot in my work is Opus Interrasaile—the fusion of the raw, imperfect beauty of nature with the precision of craftsmanship.

What Is Opus Interrasaile?

Opus Interrasaile, literally meaning “work shaved or scraped in-between,” is a pierced openwork metalworking technique with origins dating back to the 3rd century AD. Popularized in Rome, this technique was extensively used by metalworkers to create intricate arabesque patterns and other decorative designs, often seen in Byzantine jewelry. The process involves punching holes into metal to simulate lattice patterns, creating openwork gold jewelry, and more. Patterns were often first drawn onto the metal, then various tools were used to remove the desired pieces, resulting in delicate, detailed designs.

In the West, Opus Interrasaile is often referred to as openwork or pierced work, the equivalent technique in Japan is known as sukashibori, and it is prominently featured in Buddhist art. This shared tradition across different cultures highlights the universal appeal of creating intricate designs by removing metal in a way that allows light to pass through, transforming the piece into a work of both art and function.

I see Opus Interrasaile not only as a technique but as a philosophy—one that celebrates the beauty found in the raw, unrefined elements of nature, which are carefully shaped into refined, functional art. This balance between chaos and precision is a hallmark of the pieces I create.

Opus Interrasaile and Ravena Metalworks

Every piece at Ravena Metalworks carries with it the soul of nature. As I work with metals like brass, copper, aluminum and argentium silver, I honor the characteristics of these materials—its strength, its ability to age and develop character, its unrefined beauty. These metals are more than just materials; they are an extension of the very concept of Opus Interrasaile, capturing the rawness of nature, handcrafted into sculpture and wearable art. Just as nature shapes the landscape through time, I allow the metals to speak through their unique features and textures. The result is art and jewelry that not only looks beautiful but tells a story—one that embraces the natural world’s rhythm and unpredictability.

A Blend of Craftsmanship and Nature

Much like Opus Interrasaile, the design process at Ravena Metalworks isn’t just about perfecting every detail. It’s about allowing the metal to interact with the world around it in a way that is both organic and intentional. My creations are more than mere objects—they are a reflection of my commitment to traditional, mindful craftsmanship, honoring the past and present.

My work resonates with the timeless beauty of metals that evolve with age, develop their own patina, and gain meaning through wear. This philosophy mirrors the journey of life itself—imperfections, changes, and growth all wrapped into a beautiful, ever-evolving masterpiece.

A Personal Touch

Just as I focus on the connection between nature and craftsmanship, I also find value in the relationships I build with my clients. I want to create pieces that not only speak to the heart of the wearer but also reflect their unique journey. Whether it’s through custom designs or hand-crafted pieces that speak to an individual’s soul, my art and jewelry is about more than just adornment; it’s about personal connection, much like Opus Interrasaile that embraces the spaces between the tangible and intangible.

Opus Interrasaile is a technique and concept that celebrates the beauty found in the unexpected, the negative and positive, and the spaces in between. I find inspiration in this ancient technique and philosophy, merging the natural imperfections of metals with the precision of my craft to create timeless pieces that resonate on a deeper level. Each piece we create is a reflection of the balance between our interaction and relationship with nature, that tells a story of both elegance and authenticity while honoring ancient techniques.
