Milk quartz or milky quartz is the most common variety of crystalline quartz. The white color is caused by minute fluid inclusions of gas, liquid, or both, trapped during crystal formation. Milky quartz is also known as ‘snow quartz’ or simply ‘white quartz’. It is associated with innocence and tranquility. Milky quartz is said to help us view the world without preconceived ideas or prejudices. It is also believed to stop us being overwhelmed by strong emotions.
History & Lore
Numerous archaeological excavations have shown that milky quartz has existed for thousands of years, even as early as prehistoric times. It was used primarily for practical purposes, usually to make tools, weapon points, or to start a fire. Since Antiquity, it has been attributed with healing powers, so this white mineral has become a real magical product with supernatural powers. The Greco-Romans used it to cauterize wounds by combining it with the sun rays. When exposed to the sun, it would absorb the energy and heat provided by the sun, giving it an effective healing power against wounds. Among Middle Eastern civilizations, it is said to have the ability to give the power of invisibility. Finally, the Maya used it as an element of dowsing to find water for years. Milky quartz is a variety of mineral sediment (SiO2). Its color is the result of natural phenomena, including the exposure of crystals to radioactive elements over a long period of time. The process by which this happens is still somewhat unclear today. What we do know, however, is that this exposure can change the oxidation states of the impurities in its structure. This has the effect of creating particular colors, characteristic of milky quartz stone. This mineral has small cavities containing carbon dioxide or water. The more cavities it has, the more opaque it is.
Meaning & Symbolism
Referred to as the “Wisdom Stone”, Milky Quartz has calming and soothing properties that compare to “maternal love”. Quartz in general is the second most common mineral on earth and can conduct electricity under pressure. With its ancient angelic wisdom, it holds and releases information; and it’s because of this that you may notice your Milky Quartz become clearer in color at times. With its recognized magical powers, it promotes clarity in thought and raises awareness.
Origins & Location
Quartz is a defining constituent of granite and other felsic igneous rocks. It is very common in sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and shale. It is found throughout the world.
