The Magic of UV Resin: How I Create Dewdrop Effects

There’s something enchanting about the quiet shimmer of early morning dew, those tiny droplets that rest on leaves, petals, and spiderwebs, catching the light just so. It’s that same sense of wonder I aim to capture in my work at Ravena Metalworks, and one of the ways I do it is with UV resin.

What Is UV Resin?

UV resin is a clear, fast-curing resin that hardens in just minutes under a UV light. Unlike traditional epoxy resin, which can take hours or even days to fully cure, UV resin sets quickly and creates a glass-like, durable finish. It’s perfect for artists who work in layers, who need precision, and who love adding fine detail to their designs.

How I Use UV Resin in My Metalwork

I use UV resin to create realistic dewdrop effects on my hand-cut metal jewelry and sculptures. Each drop is applied by hand, either with a dropper, brush, or toothpick—onto the surface of my aluminum, copper, brass, or silver pieces. Once placed, I cure it with a UV light, creating a permanent, crystal-clear droplet that mimics the look of fresh morning dew.

Sometimes I tint the resin slightly to resemble tree sap, water droplets, or even honey, depending on the theme of the piece. These subtle accents enhance the natural, organic quality of my work and invite a closer look. Whether it’s a delicate leaf pendant or a larger sculptural form, the UV resin adds a sense of depth, light, and softness to the otherwise strong lines of metal.

Why UV Resin is a Game-Changer for Metal Artists

Using UV resin in metalwork isn’t just a design choice, it’s a way to tell a story. It bridges the gap between the natural and the manmade, the permanent and the fleeting. The smooth, glossy texture of resin contrasts beautifully with the hard textures of pierced metal, while still feeling like it belongs.

It’s also durable enough to be used in wearable art, making it a great option for those looking to add small, tactile details to rings, earrings, and necklaces without sacrificing longevity.

A Touch of Nature You Can Wear

Each dewdrop I create is more than an embellishment, it’s a reminder of those tiny, beautiful moments in nature that often go unnoticed. It’s a quiet pause. A breath. A glimmer.

So next time you see one of my pieces, whether it’s on my website or at a show, take a closer look. That little drop of resin might just transport you back to an early morning field, where the world feels soft and full of possibility.
